A completely unique element has been added to Papírová Street in Liberec - a canal hatch from Jerusalem. This unusual symbol of the interconnection of cultures and cities was brought to the Czech Republic thanks to the efforts of Dana Keren, Programme Manager of the Czech Centre in Israel, as part of the Civilization project.
Dana Keren, a native of nearby Jičín, who has been working in Israel since 2016 as a project manager at the Czech Centre, is involved in the Civilization project in collaboration with its founder Tomáš Hais. When she was approached with a request to obtain a canal hatch from Jerusalem, she did not hesitate to take action. Negotiations with the Jerusalem City Hall and the logistics of transportation took a lot of effort, but in the end it was possible to bring this unique symbol to Liberec.
Jerusalem's canal hatches are no ordinary pieces of iron - they bear Hebrew inscriptions and a specific design that recalls the history and character of the city. In Liberec, this manhole cover was inaugurated on 25 July 2024 and is now part of a unique gallery in Papírová street, symbolically connecting cities and cultures.
The Civilization project led by the G300 association is transforming the Papírová street in Liberec into a unique space where history and culture meet literally underfoot. Canal hatches are donated by cities from the Czech Republic and abroad, creating a unique gallery connecting the world through small but eloquent symbols.
