The party and the Guests

The drama The party and the Guests from 1965 was produced by Czech director Jan Němec. The film criticised negative social phenomena and became an important part of the Czech New Wave. This movement of Czechoslovak film writers and directors working in the 1960s is considered one of the most important in world cinema. The movie won the prestigious Trilobit award and in 1966 also the International Film Critics Award. The film was very popular with audiences abroad and reaped great success, but unfortunately its screening in Czechoslovakia was banned in 1968.

Synopsis

It is a beautiful summer day and a group of guests come to celebrate an influential man. Although the host feigns satisfaction and greets the guests with a smile, subtle signals make it clear that the celebration will not be entirely without problems. The whole situation escalates when one of the guests expresses his own opinion and leaves the party.
