The Good Soldier Švejk is an anti-war film comedy, combining timeless folk humor and sharp irony. The film tells the story of a peculiar hero who, for eagerly following the orders of his superiors, becomes a disaster for those around him. The legendary role of the comic soldier was played by the unforgettable Rudolf Hrušínský. The film "The Good Soldier Švejk" and its sequel "I Dutifully Report" were made by the experienced screenwriter and director Karel Steklý. The film is based on the first part of the novel The Fateful Adventures of the Good Soldier Švejk During the World War by Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek. The four-part humorous novel is one of the most popular Czech books and has been translated into more than 55 languages.

Synopsis

Josef Švejk, a Prague dog dealer, is arrested for treason after the Sarajevo assassination. It happens in his favourite pub "U kalicha".  After interrogation and examination by a board of psychiatrists, Švejk is freed for patent idiocy. But Švejk does not hesitate for a minute and, despite the constant pain in his legs, decides to sign up and join the army.
